How Genealogists Describe Their Mechanism of Epistemic Change: A Qualitative Descriptive Case Study
Janice Leigh Klima
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
This qualitative descriptive case study explores how genealogists describe the mechanism of epistemic change in their research, highlighting the roles of epistemological doubt, epistemological volition, and resolution strategies. It explores the integration of digital technologies in genealogical practices in the United States and their implications on knowledge acquisition, validation, and ethical considerations. Through thematic analysis of data from interviews, focus groups, and surveys, this study describes the complex interplay between technology and traditional genealogical methods, emphasizing the importance of narrative reconstruction, ethical dilemmas, and the collaborative nature of genealogical research. The findings reveal genealogists' resolution strategies in confronting doubt and integrating added information, contributing significantly to the understanding of epistemology within genealogy and beyond. This research sheds light on potential applications into education pedagogy, technologies like artificial intelligence, the responsibilities of corporations and future governance. By bridging gaps in comprehension of epistemic change, this study not only advances genealogical research methodologies but also offers a foundation for enhancing epistemology in processing historical data and critical thinking. It emphasizes the need for further exploration into the emotional and ethical dimensions of individual domains, advocating for interdisciplinary approaches to education and training that encompass the richness of genealogical inquiry in the digital age.
