Daniel A. Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
The utilization of arts-based professional learning to enhance leadership behaviors has been investigated in such fields as business and healthcare, however, its impact on educational leadership is not well understood. This study investigated the nature of arts-based approaches to leadership development experienced by public school principals in a Midwestern state. Furthermore, the study also examined the nature of arts-based learning the principals incorporated into their teachers' professional development programs. Employing a qualitative approach predicated on semi-structured interviews, the principals also provided their perceptions of the benefits of engaging with the arts to bolster their leadership capabilities and the perceived benefits of having their teachers engage with the arts. Working with the assumption that engaging with myriad arts in professional development settings impacts often ignored leadership behaviors, a constant comparative analysis yielded both expected and unexpected findings. Moreover, these principals all utilized the arts in developing their teachers and in improving classroom and school outcomes.
