Assessing Undergraduate Student Perceptions of Service Quality in Jesuit Higher Education Institutions: A Mixed-Methods Study
Katherine L. Devany
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
This study examined the perceptions of students related to determinants of service quality experienced within both academic and non-academic areas of their respective institutions. As competition increases among higher education institutions so does the need to implement organizational strategies comparable to that of industries outside academia. It is important to identify those components of service quality deemed most salient by students to minimize any gaps between perceived and actual findings. An explanatory sequential design was selected to further explain data through the administration of a quantitative survey followed by qualitative semi-structured interviews. A service quality conceptual framework guided the design and presentation of both the quantitative and qualitative results. Data from the quantitative phase (survey) was analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. Additionally, results of the quantitative descriptive and inferential statistical analysis informed the design of the qualitative interview protocol. Three themes emerged from the interviews: Cura Personalis, Shifting Expectations, and Inclusive Community. The findings of the study supported the notion that the process of how service quality is delivered impacts undergraduate students' perception. These findings can assist administrators in Jesuit higher education institutions in allocating resources to areas that are most significant to students rather than predicting or forecasting which components may have the most impact on perception.
