AI and Fashion: Student Perspectives on the Application and Ethical Use of Various Forms of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in a Fashion Context

In the dynamic landscape of fashion, the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence technology (GAI) stands as a transformative force. Fashion professionals and students must adapt to this technological shift, recognizing AI's pivotal role in enhancing product development. This paper explores the incorporation of GAI into fashion curricula to equip students with essential skills for use in the industry. Drawing upon the United Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), the study investigates various factors influencing students' perceptions of GAI, including its utility, ease of use, and potential career benefits. Employing a mixed-methods approach within targeted fashion education courses, the research evaluates students' experiences with GAI tools for text and image generation, looking at individual and team learning scenarios. Findings shed light on educational strategies to navigate GAI adoption in fashion product development, ensuring students' preparedness for the evolving technological landscape of the industry. Furthermore, this study delves into the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and fashion, examining the ethical considerations accompanying the adoption of GAI into fashion education to prepare students for use within their future careers. As the fashion sector has historically embraced technological innovations, the integration of GAI promises transformative potential but also raises ethical concerns reminiscent of past advancements. Through a mixed-methods approach, the research investigates how an ethical intervention impacts students' perspectives on GAI's use in fashion, identifying key ethical concerns influencing their perceptions of use for future careers. The study uncovers nuanced shifts in student views toward text-based and image-based GAI tools after partaking in an educational ethics intervention, underscoring the necessity of ethical education to navigate the complex landscape of AI technology in fashion. These findings offer insights to inform pedagogical strategies and prepare students for ethical engagement in the rapidly evolving fashion industry.
