Lifting as We Climb: Lived Experiences of High School Principals Who Impact Black Male Student Achievement
Courtney Riley
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Houston Baptist University
The purpose of this study is to examine principals' perceptions of the necessary components to ensuring Black males matriculate to college through their college-going culture in high schools, and how principals and school leaders can identify common practices on campus and focus on ways to develop readiness and achievement. The study used a narrative approach to conduct semi structured interviews to discuss experiences of principals of schools with a significant population of Black males. The study found that principals should ensure that families are involved in the post-secondary access process, early exposure to post-secondary programs and community role models will contribute to Black Males accessing college at a higher rate.
