The Ethical Considerations of Gifted Education: Teacher Training and Fidelity of Practice
Shanna E. Haden
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, St. Thomas University
This qualitative study examines beliefs regarding the ethics of gifted education strategies and teacher training to ensure high-quality education for diverse students, and to analyze the perceptions of best instructional practices for gifted education, as well as the ethical considerations of gifted education to ensure fidelity of education. Teachers are ethically and morally responsible for instructing gifted students at their individual levels. This study reveals a need for training in all aspects of gifted education for general content teachers, gifted teachers, and administrators to ensure a change in gifted services. The training described in this study will prepare teachers to teach gifted students using a hands-on approach, content-specific best-practice examples, and a focus on the ethical considerations of gifted education. Furthermore, the training should also use an overarching combination of the current theories of transformational leadership and constructivism and the teaching strategy of heutagogy to help teachers create an ideal classroom environment for gifted students.
