The Development of a Digital Literacy Instrument to Measure the Frequency of Digital Skills Usage in the Workplace

The ever-changing advances in technology require digital literacy skills for success in the workplace. To determine the critical digital literacy skills needed in the workplace today, the development of a reliable, valid instrument occurred using the nine steps of scale development by DeVellis and Thorpe (2021). Based on the SkillRise (2020a) "Profile of a Lifelong Learner", 45 initial items were crafted and subsequently reviewed by an expert panel through closed- and open-ended questions. This process established the final instrument's content and construct validity. Based on expert panel feedback, 30 items formed the basis of the pilot study questionnaire. From the 29 completed responses, the reliability of the instrument was confirmed through the exploratory factor analysis, Pearson product-moment correlations, and Cronbach's alpha. A final optimized instrument of 18 items emerged with five categories--advancing progress, supporting others, exploring improvements, utilizing digital skills, and seeking understanding. Cronbach's alpha reached an overall 0.901 for the entire instrument, indicating very high reliability. Each of the categories also reached moderate to high reliability through Cronbach's alpha, and the items also showed strong correlations to other items on the final instrument. The Digital Literacy in the Workplace Scale (DLWS) achieved reliability and validity throughout the scale development process. The DLWS provides educational organizations and workplaces critical information about the crucial digital literacy skills needed for success in the workplace. Students, parent-caregivers, policymakers, educational leaders, educators, and employers all can benefit from the data that can be collected through the DLWS.
