Development and Implementation of a Socioculturally Transformative Intervention for Pre-Service Teachers: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Jessica Bagneris
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
Although the education system is beginning to recognize the impact of personal and social contextual factors by incorporating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), it often neglects the sociocultural contextual factors which are vital to the development of students from marginalized groups. The current training practices of preservice teachers incorporate little support in working with marginalized groups, who have greater risks to their development and longitudinal outcomes. As a result, additional competencies focusing on sociocultural context and transformative SEL (TSEL), which focuses on equity and social justice, must be incorporated into preservice training. The purpose of this dissertation was to justify the development of a socioculturally transformative intervention series for preservice teachers, develop the first intervention within the series, implement the intervention, and analyze its' effectiveness and feasibility. A mixed methods randomized control trial was utilized to quantitatively measure the impact of the "InvEstEd" intervention, while concurrently qualitatively describing the specific considerations of the participants as they engaged with the intervention. In addition, this study aimed to determine whether differences emerged between participants regarding their intervention uptake. Lastly, the purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and acceptability of "InvEstEd" as an intervention for preservice teachers. Receiving "InvEstEd" was found to increase preservice teachers' socioemotional consciousness, but not their sociocultural competence. The present study results offer insight into the further implementation of the "InvEstEd" intervention, the development of the more extensive intervention series, and the broader context of transformative interventions impacting socioemotional and sociocultural considerations within the education system.
