The Women of Cornell and the Nature Study Movement, 1880-1930
Kathleen Allen
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Union Institute and University
This is a story about some of the women of Cornell University who became an integral part of the nature study movement during the years from 1880-1930. The Nature Study movement's aim was to bring children and rural citizens back into a deeper relationship with nature. It is an important precursor to our contemporary environmental movements. Using primary and contemporary sources, such as historical ephemera, photographs, newspapers, journals, and archival treasures, my research centers on the academic and personal lives of these Cornell women. These women studied, taught, wrote, published, experimented, lectured, and illustrated the goals of nature study. It is critical to share their biographies as their lives exemplify the evolving roles of women in academia and science during these decades. In addition to their contributions in their respective fields, these women helped lay the foundation for conservation and environmentalism; they were women who made a difference.
