Effectiveness of the Teacher Acute Concussion Tool (TACT)
Jamie Higa
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, University of Colorado at Denver
Recent literature has shown that the average recovery time from concussion is 29.4 days (D'Lauro et al., 2018). Such injuries pose the threat to cause unforeseen and significant health problems in children that include the development of social, emotional, or behavioral disorders, poor academic performance, and long-term cognitive impairment (CDE, 2018). Pediatricians report that one of the most significant barriers to working with patients on an effective plan to return to school is the inadequate training on concussion management teachers receive (Halstead et al., 2013). The present study investigated if the Teacher Acute Concussion Tool (TACT) is effective in increasing capacity and knowledge in general education teachers who work with children who have concussions. Participants were asked about the TACT based on eight Likert scale questions and four qualitative questions. The questions measured three constructs: (1) Feasibility (2) Knowledge and (3) Capacity. The mean of responses for qualitative items ranged from 2.82 to 3.55, indicating that responses either fell on the low or high end of the distribution. Qualitative findings indicated that respondents were able to identify an increase in knowledge and specific examples of how they were able to change their teaching practices when working with a student who has a concussion after using the TACT.
