Writing Programs Aiding in Lowering Juvenile Recidivism Rates
Yelena Matevosyan
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology
Juvenile delinquency has been a great issue in the United States and there have been a multitude of efforts to reduce these offenses along with reducing recidivism rates. A 2015 report from Council of State Government Justice Center reported that there is a 76% probability that juvenile offenders will reoffend within three years and an 84% likelihood of reoffending within five years. A large percentage of juvenile offenders end up getting incarcerated at an adult prison for reoffending. This study was conducted in order to evaluate clinicians' beliefs that writing programs can be an effective tool for at-risk youth. This study also evaluated clinicians' likelihood of referring to writing programs as an adjunctive service to mental health treatment. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted in order to determine whether years of practice as a clinician impacts their beliefs about the effectiveness of writing programs for at-risk youth. A Chi-Square analysis was conducted in order to determine whether years of practice as a clinician will impact the likelihood of referral to writing programs as an adjunctive service to mental health treatment. Although findings disclosed that years of experience as a clinician did not have a statistically significant effect on clinicians' beliefs of the effectiveness of writing programs and their likelihood to refer to such programs, all responses consistently demonstrated that clinicians agree that writing programs are an effective tool, and they are willing to refer to such programs regardless of their experience.
