Gentrified Mindfulness: Perceptions of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color and People with Disabilities in Mindfulness Communities on Social Media
Kaelin Elizabeth Lee
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Ashland University
The topic of this experimental, correlational research was to gauge perceptions of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and People with Disabilities (PWD) in social media mindfulness communities. The two research questions were: a) Is there a difference in the ways BIPOC, PWD, and White and able-bodied are perceived when engaging in mindfulness activities? b) Is there a difference between the group-to-group perceptions of BIPOC, White, or disabled people in the survey images? A demographic questionnaire and two statistical analyses of a 15-question image-based survey asked respondents to assign one to six descriptors chosen from the AFINN Sentiment Lexicon to each image: tortured, guilty, manipulated, trustworthy, prosperous, and thrilled. A total of 240 survey results were analyzed using an Analysis of Variant (ANOVA) and Pearson's Coefficient or Chi-square analysis to answer the two research questions. The results showed there was indeed a difference in the ways PWD were perceived, regardless of race. The results of this study quantified the need for representation of BIPOC and PWD in social media mindfulness communities. Further research with a larger survey pool is needed, in addition to qualitative inquiry into these lived experiences which drive the narrative that true diversity and inclusion can manifest in tangible ways that will benefit all Americans, regardless of race or ability.
