To Teach SPR as a New Reading of the Book of Micah that Encourages Peace in Colombia: Case Studies in the Reformed Theological Seminary and the Suburb of Palmito
Hector Hernan Molano Cortes
ProQuest LLC, D.Min. Dissertation, American Baptist Seminary of the West
Colombia has been immersed in wars and violence for many years; some scholars say that the country has been in conflict since 1962. The reality is that the country began its development with multiple wars and power struggles, the latter incited by political parties. In the midst of multiple conflicts, religion has played an important role in the formation of the country, used by all sides for their own interests, and many times it had become a direct cause of the problems. Colombia has been marked by Christianity, most of the Colombians consider themselves as believers in God and at one time Colombia was the most Catholic country in the world. Due the arrival of Protestantism, new struggles had appeared which was spearheaded by the Catholic Church in making it difficult for the early founders of these new Protestant churches. Unfortunately, certain privileges continue to persist for the Catholic Church despite the fact that the Constitution guarantees freedom of worship. From its inception, Protestants have been involved in different wars; many of them were objects of partisan fights. More recently, they have been persecuted by guerrilla groups and paramilitaries. Today Colombia still occupies a high ranking among countries with the most persecution against Protestants. As a contribution to Christian communities to come to a better understanding of the rest that God desires for his people, I have developed this dissertation. In the understanding that Christian churches, especially their leaders, do not have an easy access to Christian education and in the absence of any methodologies that can aide them in learning about peace as God´s ultimate goal, I present the SPR (Separation-Placement- Rest) reading the Bible. This method comes out of the biblical text without any need for additional aids, it is canonical, intertextual and contextual help. SPR, once explained, can help Christians find, in their Bible´s reading, the Peace that is given by God. In this dissertation, SPR reading is applied to the book of Micah, a prophet of the golden age of prophecy whose circumstances were similar to those currently living in Colombia. This method was taught in two representative communities of the country and the results prove and validate the SPR; in addition, it has opened the way to continue giving the Christian communities tools to improve their conditions of life, especially their recognition of the Peace given by God.
