Supporting Student Workers through a Cross-Organizational Advisory Team
Matthew Burns
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
This paper examines the communication patterns of an academic program and the power dynamics between faculty, staff, and student workers. This study utilized participatory action research and consisted of two cycles of data collection. Additionally, this study relied heavily on current research and findings for nonacademic programs like libraries and campus recreation. The stakeholders for this study were members of the First Year-Engineering Program at Directional University, a private college in New England. In cycle 1, the participants took part in community roundtables to discuss their concerns. Cycle 2 provided stakeholders with an advisory team of student workers and faculty. Participants in this study responded well to the advisory team model and looked forward to its continuation after the study.
