An Analysis of "Lived Experiences" of Saudi Arabian Students Enrolled in American Universities Based on the Five Senses of Success Model
Zakiah Althobaiti
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Niagara University
Saudi Arabia has been one of the major contributors to the increasing number of international students in the United States. The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of resources provided to Saudi Arabian students while they are pursuing their postsecondary education using Lizzio's "Five Senses of Success Model" as a framework through which to understand these experiences. The researcher utilized a qualitative approach to address the research question, which is to investigate these students' experiences using the aforementioned model, understand the unaddressed challenges, and propose feasible educational solutions to aid students with the transition. This approach will help the Saudi Arabian scholarship-providing system, along with the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Education (MOE), optimize the transitional offerings provided to students by enhancing the current "Safeer-2" online portal through which Saudi students abroad currently receive academic and financial assistance. Lizzio's model was chosen as a framework within which to approach this study due to its popularity among other researchers exploring similar challenges, as well as the significance of its findings. Twenty Saudi students (11 males and 9 females) enrolled in four unidentified universities located in the northeastern United States were interviewed individually. To further understand the range of viewpoints, case studies were also incorporated. For structuring qualitative data, A comparison was drawn between the experiences of students at the four universities, and recommendations are to be made to the responsible authorities. The results revealed five topics related to the study: 1) the efforts and expectations of students, 2) difficulties and workload, 3) the knowledge gap, 4) university services, and 5) the desire for change. Finally, recommendations were added for future research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
