The Impact of a Pre-Educational Resource Program Intervention on the Level of Preparedness and Persistence of Transfer Nursing Students

This pilot study aimed to evaluate a pre-educational resource program (PREP) for transfer nursing students to determine its impact on persistence and preparedness. Drexel University (DU) College of Nursing and Health Professions offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing for traditional and transfer students. Evidence demonstrates a gap in the pass rates between traditional and transfer students for the NURS 221--Pathophysiology course. The two study groups have different preparation and time between prerequisite courses for the NURS 221--Pathophysiology course. Sufficient comprehension of anatomy and physiology is required to pass NURS 221--Pathophysiology. Transfer students complete two courses in anatomy and physiology at another accredited higher education institution. A transfer student must have completed the two anatomy and physiology courses between one and five years before starting the nursing program at DU. Conversely, traditional nursing students complete Anatomy and Physiology, I, II, and III at DU within one year before taking NURS 221--Pathophysiology. To address the knowledge gap and pass rate for transfer nursing students, PREP modules were implemented before the NURS 221--Pathophysiology course. Participants engaged in four weeks of study specific to anatomy and physiology curriculum content in an online learning management system, completed a pre-test and post-test (to determine anatomy and physiology base knowledge and confidence), met with nursing faculty, and completed three surveys. While the sample size was small, results indicate that the PREP modules positively impacted student learning, preparedness, pass rate, and persistence. Methodology and findings are discussed, and recommendations are offered for the nursing program leadership at DU.
