Theory of Mind and Relations to Preschool Children's Language Skills
Richard Marks
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
Whereas it is generally accepted that theory of mind and language are related constructs, the nature of the relation remains unclear. Past research has suggested that two related, but distinct, components of theory of mind are differentially related to language. The present study attempted to clarify the relation between theory of mind and language within the context of this two-component model of theory of mind. Data from a large sample of preschool children were analyzed by utilizing a cross-lagged panel model to investigate concurrent and longitudinal relations between both theory of mind components and oral language. Results contradicted the predictions of the two-component model, however, features of the analysis prevent strong conclusions from being made about the relation between each theory of mind component and language.
