Exploring Barriers and Challenges to the Leadership Advancement of Female Professionals in the Safety Industry
Buckley, Brittanie Charlotta
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Southern Nazarene University
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of eight female safety professionals who have advanced in leadership roles. Participants selected represented a pool of highly experienced and qualified female safety professionals. Data were collected through interviews, document collection, and a questionnaire. Four themes emerged through data analysis: (1) male dominance, (2) lack of opportunities, (3) barriers and roadblocks, and (4) common avenues to success. Longwe's (1990) Empowerment of Women Conceptual Framework was used as a lens to analyze leadership qualities according to the five integral levels of empowerment: control, participation, conscientization, access, and welfare. Findings revealed gaps problematic to the growth and development of a more diverse workforce in the safety industry. Based on the findings of this study, it solidifies the need for more leadership opportunities and warrants a healthier workplace for women in the safety industry. Future research could include a larger sample of female safety professionals and focus on the male perception of female safety professionals and the psychological culture behind the stereotypes of females working in the construction and manufacturing industries.
