The Impact of Self-Efficacy Training in an Intensive Lifestyle Education Program

Background: Chronic disease can lead to disability, reduced quality of life, reduced productivity, and increased medical costs. Common chronic diseases that develop due to unhealthy lifestyle factors include obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and stroke. An intensive lifestyle education program (ILEP) provides an opportunity to prevent, control, and reverse chronic disease. Local Problem: The current ILEP curriculum does not address self-efficacy in managing a chronic disease. Incorporating a self-efficacy training module into the ILEP can empower patients to confidently manage a chronic condition and improve their overall health outcomes and quality of life. Methods: A quantitative comparative analysis was conducted between two education classes to determine the impact of baseline and post-program laboratory, biometric, and General Self-efficacy (GSE-6) survey outcomes during a twelve-week ILEP. Investigation: The first class received an online self-efficacy education session during week seven of the ILEP, Class Two did not receive education. Both classes completed pre- and post-program laboratory, biometric, and GSE-6 surveys. A convenience sample of 23 participants completed the GSE-6 survey. Results: The statistical analysis did not reveal statistically significant differences in self-efficacy between the two ILEP classes, however, it did reveal statistically significant values for body mass index and improvements in four biometric values, including fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and body mass index. Conclusions: The Evidence-Based Quality Improvement (EBQI) project can be replicated by adapting the ILEP in other clinical settings such as community-based health clinics, physician practices, or hospital programs.
