Wright, DaQurta Shalon Kimberly
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Charleston Southern University
This qualitative phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of African American women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) technology and how they persist in the field. The study uses semi-structured interview questions to understand if the Strong Black Woman concept is a factor in the persistence of six participants in STEM technology. The research participants share their narratives of challenges, obstacles, and barriers they faced throughout their careers, and their roles in overcoming them. The study findings reveal three main themes: black woman stereotypes, obligation, and self-care. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
