An Analytical Review of the Effects of Emotional Intelligence on the Burnout Syndrome among Nurses with Probing Potential Coping Strategies to Revitalize the Nursing Curriculum to Improve the Performance of Healthcare Professionals
Smith, Vicki
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Delaware State University
The purpose of this study is to conduct an analytical review of the effects of emotional intelligence on burnout syndrome among nurses and to probe potential coping strategies to revitalize the nursing curriculum to improve the performance of healthcare professionals. With nursing burnout on the rise and a nursing shortage already a problem, interventions to reduce burnout need to be explored. The Joint Commission, healthcare's accrediting body, recognizes the problem of burnout and the need for resiliency among nurses. They have made recommendations to combat burnout at the institutional level. This researcher is interested in what the nurse can do on an individual level to protect oneself from burnout. The guiding theories for this study are the conservation of resources theory and the resiliency theory, along with the job demands-resources model. This qualitative research is a case study design. Three case studies have been selected for analysis in hopes that if emotional intelligence is proven to be beneficial, then recommendations can be made to nurse educators to initiate emotional intelligence training for their nursing students and graduates as well as novice nurses. Those who work in high-stress environments may better protect themselves against burnout by receiving training in emotional intelligence, which will set them on a path toward more happiness, a better work-life balance, and more positive connections. It equips people with the resources they need to be healthy despite the frequent exposure to stressful situations inherent to the healthcare industry. The findings of this research have revealed that taking a pause, practicing deep breathing, and shifting one's viewpoint may help professionals deal with the stresses of the present moment in the workplace. This research also uncovered methods for ensuring the health of healthcare professionals, such as the value of self-awareness, self-reflection, and mindfulness in the formation of guiding principles, the value of accepting criticism, the value of admitting one's weaknesses, and the value of establishing effective routines that act as a barrier between the professional and the stress encountered at work.
