Breaking with Tradition: A Case Study of One South African Institution of Higher Education's Transformation
Brown, Delores Gillum
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana State University
The front pages of the nation's newspapers and nightly television news segments continue to share stories about United States Black colleges and universities that struggle to survive or have been forced to close, despite their remarkable legacy. With a downward spiral-taking place for several of these institutions, there is inarguably a need for a broadened investigation to determine ways in which such higher education institutions can be transformed. This qualitative case study examined the extent to which commonly accepted change strategies were used to transform Vista University Bloemfontein Campus in South Africa, a higher education institution that shares a history of racial oppression with that of Black colleges and universities in the United States. This study yielded three primary themes: needing educational inclusion and equality, skilled and accessible leadership, and curriculum alignment. Attention to these findings can help U.S. Black college presidents and other leaders responsible for turning around a failing Black higher education institution.
