The Study of High School Administrators' Perceptions of the Future of Women as Athletic Directors in the State of Missouri
Welch, Christine H.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, United States Sports Academy
The purpose of the study was to determine high school administrators' perceptions of the future of women as athletic directors in the state of Missouri. Superintendents, high school principals, athletic directors (ADs) in Missouri completed a Likert survey in an effort to understand perceptual context as to why more women are not in positions as athletic directors. Learning from their insight could bring about a discussion as to the importance of women's leadership roles as athletic directors in more high schools in Missouri, encourage more women to apply for, retain or obtain positions as athletic directors, and to portray this position as a viable career choice for young women in the future. The perceptual nature of the study allows for understanding of high school administrators in the current time in which we live and work. The school districts and survey participants from each high school were chosen at random using the Missouri edition of the 2009-2010 Clell Wade Coaches Directory. A total of 466 (N = 466) high school district administrators from the state of Missouri were invited to participate in the study, from both private and public school districts. At the completion of the surveys, there were a total of 291 males and 87 females making a sample population of N = 378. The results of the study showed a statistically significant difference between male and female high school administrators' perceptions of women's current and future leadership roles as athletic directors in Missouri high school athletics. There was no statistically significant difference between private and public high school administrators' perceptions of women's current and future leadership roles as athletic directors, in Missouri high school athletics.
