Working the Second Shift: Perceptions of Part-Time Faculty Teaching Evening Classes at a Midwest Community College
Lewellen, Mary J.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Ball State University
This qualitative study examined perceptions of part-time faculty who teach classes during the evening at three Midwest community college campuses. Through the use of semi-structured, one-on-one interviews, perceptions of part-time faculty were explored in the areas of in-classroom experiences, out-of-classroom experiences, and institutional factors that affected them as faculty members. As a result, the grounded theory that emerged held that evening part-time community college faculty members feel more marginalized than part-time community college faculty members who work during the day, and therefore perceive themselves to be the least integrated into the community college institutional culture.
