Textbooks play an important role in English teaching and learning. The researcher administrated qualitative interviews with ten English teachers from a college in central Taiwan to explore Taiwanese college English teachers' Freshman English textbook selection criteria, and the rationales underlying these criteria. There are four research questions in this study. For the first three research questions, the data were analyzed quantitatively in terms of frequency, percentage, and the order of importance. As for the fourth research question, the data was explained in a narrative way by including direct quotations from the participants' interview transcripts. The results indicated that there are fifteen criteria currently used by the participants for Taiwanese college Freshman English textbook selection: (1) target skills, (2) learners' needs, (3) level, (4) authenticity, (5) communicative ability, (6) organization, (7) pluralism, (8) cultural introduction, (9) methodology, (10) appropriate exercises, (11) illustrations, (12) clear instruction, (13) cost-effectiveness, (14) using experience, and (15) ancillary materials. For the participants, level, learners' needs, authenticity, ancillary materials, and communicative ability were the top five priorities when selecting a Taiwanese college Freshman English textbook. Regarding the comparison between the participants' and experts' selection criteria, the results showed that the overwhelming majority of both groups stressed the following criteria: learners' needs, level, and authenticity. However, when contrasting the criteria employed by the teacher participants and the experts, the discrepancies regarding certain criteria are apparent. For example, all participants selected the criterion "ancillary materials", whereas only thirty seven percent of the experts stressed ancillary materials. Regarding the rationales underlying each criterion between the participants and experts, the results revealed that, on the whole, the participants and the experts shared similar opinions with some discrepancies. Based on the literature review in chapter two, the results obtained in chapter four and the discussions in chapter five, the researcher suggests a guideline for Taiwanese college Freshman English textbook selection. Hopefully, this guide and the results of the research questions presented above may help people become more aware of the Taiwanese college Freshman English textbook selection criteria and the rationales underlying these criteria, and equip college English teachers with better knowledge to make wiser decisions in selecting college Freshman English textbooks.
