Planning a Creative Science Curriculum
Iiyambo, Rebekah
Primary Science Review, n88 p16-19 May-Jun 2005
A group of science coordinators in the London Borough of Newham decided that they wanted to create an exciting, stimulating and creative curriculum for teaching science across key stages 1 and 2 (5-11 year-olds). They were motivated to do this because they were concerned about an overloaded curriculum, dominated by literacy and numeracy, with competition from other areas of the curriculum for the limited amount of time left. They wanted to explore whether a science curriculum developed through the theme of creativity and taught through the arts could meet the needs of the children in their schools. They also hoped to put some life back into the children's daily experience in primary school, which had tended to become a bit of a literacy and numeracy treadmill. This was part of a wider cooperation between five Newham primary schools (Gallions, North Beckton, Ellen Wilkinson, Winsor and Sir John Heron) whose head teachers agreed that, as far as possible, they would aim to teach the National Curriculum through expressive arts. To explore this possibility they formed the "Newham Way Cooperative". In this article, the author describes how science can be taught rigorously and thoroughly through expressive arts, as part of the "Newham Way Cooperative".
