A Member of the Supporting Cast
St. Jarre, Kevin
Phi Delta Kappan, v89 n9 p664-666 May 2008
In this article, the author responds to the comments made by Robert Bain and Jesus Garcia to his article entitled "Reinventing Social Studies." He says instead of discussing his suggested solutions to the problem, Bain tells everyone that there are and have been no problems in social studies education, that American citizens are well prepared, and that history is not just historical facts. Unlike Bain, Garcia understands that the teaching of social studies must change. There is a need to innovate because there is a real problem: American people are not prepared for the immense responsibility that comes with being Americans. The author stresses that it is important to leave behind what everyone has been doing since 1916, namely focusing primarily on history, and begin to teach the social sciences as courses in their own right, with history relegated to the role of member of the supporting cast.
