Virtually Successful: Defeating the Dropout Problem through Online School Programs
Roblyer, M. D.
Phi Delta Kappan, v88 n1 p31-36 Sep 2006
Although dropout rates in virtual school courses are typically quite high, some virtual programs have very low course dropout and failure rates and better passing rates on key criterion tests (e.g., AP tests) than do traditional school programs. Directors of five successful virtual schools agreed to share their "formulas for success" in a series of interviews with the author. These school leaders made it clear that not only can virtual schools be as successful as face-to-face ones, online programs increasingly challenge traditional schools to emulate their "virtual successes" by including online options, services, and teaching strategies.
