Challenging Students' Beliefs about Mathematics: The Use of Documentary to Alter Perceptions of Efficacy
Hekimoglu, Serkan; Kittrell, Emily
PRIMUS, v20 n4 p299-331 2010
This study investigates whether seeing a documentary on how mathematicians do mathematics improves students' math "self-efficacy beliefs." The analysis of students' written reflections and classroom observations suggests that watching the documentary may help students' math anxiety decrease and positive self-efficacy toward learning mathematics increase. This experience also provides students with a more accurate portrait of mathematics and mathematicians in general. (Contains 4 footnotes.)
