Developing Leadership: Creating the Schools of Tomorrow. Professional Learning
Coles, Martin, Ed.; Southworth, Geoff, Ed.
Open University Press
The idea for this book grew out of an international conference organized by the National College for School Leadership, An International Future: Learning from best practice worldwide, which explored innovative and significant aspects of educational leadership and brought together international colleagues to generate new understandings. The conference proved a dynamic forum for debate for researchers, academics, policymakers and practitioners. It was clear at the conference that there was a consensus of understanding around certain key themes that crossed national boundaries. In this book, well-known international contributors explore this consensus to promote the key themes which reflect the best present understanding of good school leadership, and to inform school leaders about leading edge thinking which bears on their role. Following a preface by the series editor; and an introduction entitled, Developing Leadership: Creating the Schools of Tomorrow, this book is divided into the following chapters: (1) Developing Leaders for Their Future Not Our Past (Dean Fink); (2) Developing Leadership for Succession (Andy Hargreaves); (3) Developing Distributed Leadership (James Spillane); (4) Developing Leadership for Learning Communities (Louise Stoll and Ray Bolam); (5) Developing Leadership for Schools Facing Challenging Circumstances (Gary Crow); (6) Developing Leadership in Context (Allan Walker and Clive Dimmock); (7) Developing Innovative Leadership (Ken Stott and Lee Sing Kong); (8) Developing Beginning Leadership (Fred Paterson and John West-Burnham); (9) Developing Leadership for e-Confident Schools (Tony Richardson); and (10) Developing Leadership for Organisational Learning (Bill Mulford and Halia Silins). The book concludes with Overview and Conclusions by Geoff Southworth.
