The external degree program, based solely on test proficiency, offers to its students not an educational opportunity; not a learning situation but a schema for securing a degree, with any kind of socialization into the profession conspicuously missing from the program. (Author/DS)

Three model programs are discussed: The nurse-scientist program, the professional doctorate, and the Ph.D. in nursing. Attention is also given to Wayne State University's degree program plan, faculty requirements, and student admission.

The project was designed to offer opportunities for part-time study to full-time employed nurses seeking baccalaureate degrees. A major portion of the requirements would be met through independent study programs. Activities involved in carrying out the program are discussed. (EC)
