A paper reviewing the psychology and physiology of listening, the importance of attention to the listening skill in the foreign language curriculum, and strategies intended to engender in the learner the ability to listen with comprehension. Examines various forms of pure skills and skills combination laboratory testing developed at the Geddes Language Center (GLC) of Boston University during the past 10 years. Discusses suggestions for refinements and basic testing principles for each format, based on an evaluation of oral/aural exams on file at GLC. (MES)

Two topics are treated specifically: (1) the laboratory from a technical and theoretical perspective, and (2) an analysis of the language skills most effectively trained through use of the language laboratory.
