Results of a study of the curricular content of the foreign language (FL) methods course are presented, based on 157 FL methods course syllabi from 144 colleges and universities. A single Ph.D. program cannot be designed for candidates who will be either researchers and teachers. The solution is two different programs, one to serve each purpose. A plan for a Ph.D. research program in German is outlined. (CFM)

Issues in the foreign language placement of college students are discussed: the necessity of a placement test for all incoming students, selection of such a test from the available options, decline of student performance in the last 20 years, and articulation courses from high school to college. A summary is presented of the views of foreign language experts concerning the foreign language requirements for preparation toward liberal arts degrees in schools and colleges, and their opinions on what should be priority goals of foreign language departments.
