Tronick, Edward; And Others – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1980
Presents a descriptive analysis of infant-adult face-to-face interaction, as well as the data for analyses of the relations between the two partners and the contribution of each one during the interaction. Subjects were five infants (aged 80-92 days) and their mothers. (MP)

Lewis, Michael – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1990
Discusses the social development of infants in terms of a set of tasks which include identity, culturation, and reproduction. Focuses on the task of identity, the role of self-awareness in relationships, and the relationship between identity and emotional life. (RJC)

Wachs, Theodore D. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1989
Develops a classification system for the physical environment based on 3 dimensions of stimulation. Intercorrelations of physical and social environmental measures obtained for 88 infants of 12 months supported the validity of the decision rule that nonresponsive animate stimulation is primarily physical rather than social. (RJC)

Tilford, Jane A. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1976
Compares infants' performance based on chronological age as opposed to conceptual age. The Bayley Mental Scales were used to test 20 premature experimental infants and 20 full-term control infants. Results demonstrated that an infant's performance must be judged on the basis of conceptual rather than chronological age. (MS)

Bigelow, Anne E.; And Others – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1995
Two experiments investigated 8-, 10-, and 12-month-old infants' levels of searching for mothers, strangers, and objects. Found that, overall, 10- and 12-month-old infants had higher levels of searching for mothers, whereas youngest infants showed no differences for searching. This discrepancy is likely due to social cognitive development and…

(Author/CB)

Bretherton, Inge – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1984
Argues (1) that Feinman (1982) and Campos (1983) agree that 10-month-old infants are able to use their mother's emotional expression to come to an appraisal of a third event and (2) that this claim is supported by studies of mother-infant interaction and communication. (Author/RH)
