Aggression and Adaptive Functioning: The Bright Side to Bad Behavior.
Hawley, Patricia H.; Vaughn, Brian E.
Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, v49 n3 p239-42 Jul 2003
Asserts that effective children and adolescents can engage in socially undesirable behavior to attain personal goals at relatively little personal or interpersonal cost, implying that relations between adjustment and aggression may not be optimally described by standard linear models. Suggests that if researchers recognize that some aggression serves an adaptive function, they can focus efforts on identifying the configurations of form and function that are associated with negative consequences.
