Tao, Yan; Williams, John N. – Language Learning, 2018
A hallmark of grammatical knowledge is the ability to parse novel syntactic structures. Previous artificial language studies have examined learning hierarchical structures, but few have involved meaningful language and shown generalization to novel structures. This study addressed this issue using the semiartificial language paradigm. The…

Paul, Jing Z.; Grüter, Theres – Language Learning, 2016
This study investigated order-of-learning effects on the acquisition of classifier-noun associations in Chinese in two experiments modeled after Arnon and Ramscar's (2012) study of artificial language learning. In Experiment 1, learners with no prior exposure to Chinese showed better learning of classifier-noun associations when exposed to larger…

Lee, Chee Ha; Kalyuga, Slava – Language Learning, 2011
This article reports the results of an experiment designed to investigate the effectiveness of pinyin (a phonic transcription system) in learning vocabulary of Chinese as a second language from the perspective of cognitive load theory. In the reported experiment, the learning effects of the vertical and horizontal layouts of characters, pinyin,…

Luk, Zoe Pei-sui; Shirai, Yasuhiro – Language Learning, 2009
In SLA, it has been often assumed that the effect of the first language (L1) is not very strong in the acquisition of grammatical morphemes (e.g., Ellis, 1994; Mitchell & Myles, 2004). However, such an assumption has not been systematically examined in the literature. This article reviews the morpheme studies conducted with native speakers of…

Beebe, Leslie M. – Language Learning, 1977
This paper describes research that investigated the influence of the listener on the dialectal code-switching behavior of a group of Chinese-Thai bilingual teachers. (CFM)

Cichocki, W.; And Others – Language Learning, 1993
An error analysis based on phonetic transcription of French utterances by native speakers of Cantonese yielded a scale of difficulty for word-initial and word-final consonants. The Markedness Differential Hypothesis explained some errors. Evidence also pointed to interaction of language acquisition with markedness reversals. (35 references) (CNP)

Chu-Chang, Mae; Loritz, Donald J. – Language Learning, 1977
Twenty-two Cantonese-speaking Chinese students and 16 Spanish-speaking students were tested for short-term memory encoding strategies on word-recognition tests. Chinese speakers were found to encode Chinese ideographs phonologically, but both Chinese and Spanish learners of English were found to encode English words visually. (Author/CFM)
