Skeletal Relations: A School Librarian, a Teacher, and a Scientist Develop an Anatomy Lesson--with Games!--for Third Graders
Wolf, Sara; Sumner, Andrea M.; de Freitas, Michelle
Knowledge Quest, v40 n1 p34-41 Sep-Oct 2011
Creating a game for third-grade students that school librarians and teachers can use in their school libraries and classrooms is a unique challenge, especially if that game is based on teaching anatomy. But that's exactly what an instructional team from Auburn University in Alabama decided to do. The team--which consisted of a school librarian who is willing to try anything, a scientist who studies how living things move, and a professor who values collaboration and demonstration over lecture--put together a lesson that integrates technology and content with pretzels, Twizzlers candy, and an online game reminiscent of Whack-A-Mole. This article discusses "Edible Skeleton", an anatomy lesson that teachers and school librarians can use to teach basic human anatomy to third-grade students. (Contains 1 figure.)
