Results do not support the proposition that perceived role conflict and role ambiguity are uniformly unfavorable role perceptions. Rather, they suggest the differential influences of these role perceptions are dependent at least in part upon differences in the outcomes under consideration and the characteristics of the roles in question. Full-time homemakers (N=55) and 63 full- or part-time outside job holders completed a questionnaire which assessed their level of satisfaction overall and with specific aspects of the homemaker work role or job. Sixty-four kindergarten children were pretested for ability to conserve liquid quantity and on an original picture test of vocations, choosing a man, a woman, or both as suitable for particular jobs. Differences in vocational interests, as measured by the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory, between undergraduates having traditional, conservative attitudes towards the roles of women and those having contemporary, liberal attitudes were examined. A questionnaire was administered to 61 second graders. Sexual differences in occupational choices were apparent. Boys chose twice as many occupations as girls. More boys than girls knew their father's occupation. A series of hypotheses based on the above data was generated. (Author)
