An analysis of data from the National Study of Internal Medicine Manpower and the National Resident Matching Program is presented. The degree of congruence of the data is determined and the potential of answering questions about why and when certain career choices are made is discussed. (MLW)

Little striking difference was found between students choosing psychiatry as a first career choice and those choosing it second or third. Results imply recruiting students in the last two groups for psychiatry specialization may be difficult, based on their attitudes about scientific advancement and social status in the profession. Patterns of medical school alumni who choose to teach in their own or other medical schools, rather than practice medicine, are examined. Schools that serve as major faculty sources are ranked and percentages are given of graduates teaching at their own schools of graduation and at other schools. (MSE)

A group of students entered a special family practice curriculum track, and later selected residencies in family practice at a higher rate than classmates who expressed interest in the program but were not selected to participate, and than freshmen not preferring family practice. Most seniors also changed their freshman specialty preferences. (MSE)

Since 1974 the University of Louisville has sent medical students to a rural area to receive their core surgical clerkship experience as part of an area health education system program. The first five years of the program and its effect on residency selection are reviewed. (Author/MLW)

The medical practice setting preferences, in terms of demography, of 1978 U.S. medical school graduates are reported along with their career plans and other individual characteristics. Characteristics of graduates preferring inner city, small city and town/rural settings are highlighted. (JMD)

Career plans, based on responses to the Association of American Medical Colleges' first annual graduation questionnaire concerning the racial/ethnic identity of 1978 U.S. medical graduates, are reported. The University of Utah School of Medicine offers a supplemental undergraduate Seniors Honors Program in Surgery. The goals of the program have been to allow students to make more informed career choices, obtain positions in competitive residency programs, and a head start in postgraduate surgical training. A discriminant analysis of objective and subjective measures from the records of students who graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School over a six-year period was used to generate a model for the prediction of medical specialty choice. A study on the reasons some women over 30 decide to pursue medical careers is presented and ways that their motivations differ from those of younger female or male medical students are explored. The older women were influenced primarily by intellectual reasons and did not care about status and money. (MLW)

Results of a survey are reported that sought to obtain information on the attitudes of psychiatric residents towards research, their backgrounds in research training, their assessment of their departments and their own personal research activities, and the role of psychiatric research in their future careers. Previous studies are reviewed and new data are reported that document a decline in the percentage of American medical graduates choosing psychiatric careers. A study of factors influencing medical students in their choice of future practice locations shows that the majority of entering students prefer a small town or mid-size city, and that 70 percent prefer primary care.
