Reviews of medical education programs suggest that physicians are not adequately trained in mental retardation. A study of 64 U.S. medical schools is discussed that indicates that almost half presented only minimal coverage on the topic of mental retardation and offered inadequate clinical experience. A survey is reported that was undertaken by the Association for Medical School Pharmacology to assess the status of developing clinical pharmacology programs in medical schools in the United States and Canada and to determine why some schools have been unable to mount such programs.
