Used data from the Michigan Panel Study of Income Dynamics to examine the economic impact of child support reform on affected families. Results revealed that, compared to the current child support system, the proposed alternative would reduce poverty for custodial families but would increase poverty for noncustodial families. This paper reports a test of Easterlin's (1973) hypothesis that marital fertility is more a function of relative than actual income. Results indicate actual income exercised a significant positive effect on marital fertility at all points in time while relative income did not. (Author)

Examines the likelihood of extended joblessness for breadwinners unemployed during the recession of 1975. Women who head families are more likely to be unemployed for an extended period than are male breadwinners. Examined income and food and housing expenditures for the last married year for couples and then five years after marital dissolution in female (N=5,000) respondents to the University of Michigan Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Used data from 166 couples to explore the relationship between family task sharing and sex-role orientation, role salience, income, and family type. The results suggested that for wives, income and family type seem to increase task sharing. For husbands, sex-role orientation, family type, and role salience influenced sharing behavior. (JAC)
