An analysis of the determinants of salary structures in American universities, based on data from a national survey, reveals higher salaries for those who publish than those who don't, lower salaries for those teaching than for researchers or administrators, and substantial variation in salaries in various fields. Findings of a study show that relative salary increases for faculty and administrators were quite similar since the early 1970s. The small salary advantage for administrators appears to be attributable to gains in those positions whose work most clearly parallels work done in the private sector. (MLW)
