Kivett, Vira R. – Journal of Gerontology, 1979
The purpose of this article is to determine the relative relationship of self-rated health, age, sex, race, three measures of self-concept (actual, appearance, and ideal), education, occupation, and locus of control to religious motivation in middle age. Findings suggest that relationships may exist between the "comforts" of religion and spiritual…

Sheehan, Robert – Journal of Gerontology, 1978
This research investigates frequency and type of contact young children have had with elderly persons. It also examines the relationship between this contact and children's frequency of contact with elderly persons and their ability to identify the elderly. (Author)

MacDonald, Marian L.; Settin, Joan M. – Journal of Gerontology, 1978
The effects of two psychosocial treatments, Reality Orientation and Sheltered Workshops, were evaluated against an assessment-only control. Program effects were assessed before and after treatment using three variables: the Life Satisfaction Index-A, nurses' ratings, and behavior observations. Sheltered Workshops may be more beneficial for this…

Cohen, Donna; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1977
The objective of this study was to test the cognitive identity of older male and female populations with reference to raw score, component structure, and component score measures of spatial and verbal performance. Women (N=100) and 96 men were administered three verbal and six nonverbal cognitive subtests. (Author)

Cicirelli, Victor G. – Journal of Gerontology, 1976
Age changes in categorization and conceptual styles were studied using an object-sorting task in 276 subjects representing seven age groups. Significant age effects were found in the analysis of variance for four of six measures; there were no significant sex or interaction effects. (Author)

Kleban, Morton H.; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1976
Behavioral observations were conducted on aged mentally impaired females in an institutional environment on a weekly basis for a two-year period. Half the subjects remained stable in the level of their behavioral functioning. Stable subjects evidenced less serious medical conditions, had better comprehension of their situations and were more…

Arenberg, David – Journal of Gerontology, 1978
Relation of male adult age and performance on memory for designs was determined by analyzing three cross-sectional samples, two longitudinal samples, and within-cohort comparisons of men born in same period, tested at different times. Results indicate age declines in memory-for-designs performance but only small vocabulary change. (Author)

Cunningham, Walter R.; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1978
The purpose was to investigate effects of fatigue on intelligence test performance in the elderly. Fatigue effects were investigated by varying number of previous tests, by introducing breaks, and by using a pre-test fatigue-producing condition. The elderly are not as susceptible to test fatigue as previous results suggested. (Author)

Knapp, Martin R. J. – Journal of Gerontology, 1976
Taking multidimensional life satisfaction as the basic premise of this study, a four-equation multiple regression model was constructed for its prediction. Results indicated that the pattern of regressor influence varied greatly between equations, providing fairly specific evidence on a number of previously espoused hypotheses. (Author)

Chatfield, Walter F. – Journal of Gerontology, 1977
Examines the relative importance of income, health status, and such sociological factors as worker roles and family setting in explaining the life satisfaction of the aged. Results indicated that the lower life satisfaction resulted primarily from the loss of income and not from the loss of a worker-producer role. (Author)

Wilkie, Frances L.; Eisdorfer, Carl – Journal of Gerontology, 1977
Serial rote learning was examined as a function of sex, verbal ability, and stimulus presentation rate among 64 individuals aged 60-79 years. At the fast pacing speed, the men with average verbal skills produced fewer responses and performed less well than their female counterparts. (Author)

Silberstein, Joseph; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1977
The development of functional dependency in functionally independent aged in a community was observed by Public Health Nurses over a period of five years. Among the 138 survivors observed for five years the emergence of functional dependency was slow. The five-year risk of becoming functionally dependent was highest in Self-Care. (Author)

Collette-Pratt, Clara – Journal of Gerontology, 1976
Utilizing a semantic differential measurement technique and a sample of college students (N=123), middle-aged adults (N=90), and elderly adults (N=108), this study investigated devaluation of old age in comparison to age in general. All age groups devalued old age. The most consistent predictor of devaluation was negative attitudes toward poor…

Trela, James E. – Journal of Gerontology, 1976
This paper examines the relationship between social class and both age-graded and non-age-graded voluntary association membership in a sample of 320 older people. Special attention is focused on one age-graded association with an examination of recruitments, participation, and attrition over a six-year period. Results are discussed. (Author)

Clemente, Frank; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1975
Racial differences in membership in and attendance of voluntary associations were analyzed for comparable samples of 753 black and 260 white residents of Philadelphia age 65 and over. The results of the regression analysis indicated the black aged belonged to more associations than the white aged and had higher rates of attendance. (Author)
