Studied age differences in consumption patterns in 4,004 retired and nonretired elderly households. Results showed the retired family commits a small proportion of additional income to necessities and more to gifts and contributions. Although the average retired household enjoys economic security, medical care and energy-related expenses are problems. (JAC)
