Crockett, Walter H.; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1979
Subjects read interviews in which either a 36-year-old or a 76-year-old widow talked about her life. They then rated their attitudes. Results show the perceivers viewed specific older persons as exceptions, while retaining negative stereotypes of the elderly in general. Theoretical expectations differed from results. (Author/BEF)

Longino, Charles F.; Kitson, Gay C. – Journal of Gerontology, 1976

Brubaker, Timothy; Powers, Edward A. – Journal of Gerontology, 1976
Within the literature, a negative stereotype of "old" has been emphasized which, it has been argued, is important for self-concept in late life. This paper questions the validity of this argument and presents an alternative model more congruent with extant data. (Author)

Wingard, Joseph A.; And Others – Journal of Gerontology, 1982
Examined how attitudes about the elderly are influenced by the procedural context in which attitude expression is assessed. Administered questionnaire evaluative attitude statements to 263 adults in two judgmental contexts. Found adults in the comparative context expressed more extreme negative attitudes than in the isolated context. (Author/RC)

Goebel, Barbara L. – Journal of Gerontology, 1982
Investigated age preferences of older adults (61-89 years) for individuals with whom a relationship may potentially affect life satisfaction. Photographs of young, middle-aged, and old adults were rated by 33 older persons. Found older adults showed preferences for old and middle-aged individuals. (Author)

Keith, Patricia M. – Journal of Gerontology, 1977
This exploratory study examines relative effects of individual, client, and organizational characteristics on stereotypes of the aged held by nursing home administrators. Data from 45 administrators suggest client characteristics may be more important than personal or organizational dimensions in explaining variation in perceptions of the aged.…

Bassili, John N.; Reil, Jane E. – Journal of Gerontology, 1981
Assessed the stereotypes of groups identified by age and either by sex, occupation, or ethnicity in samples of college students and elderly persons. Findings indicate both groups of observers stereotyped young mature adults in terms of a variety of features but stereotyped old people mainly in terms of age. (Author)
