An examination of geography textbooks and scholarly journals reveals that with few exceptions they give inadequate treatment of Black Americans. Omission of any mention of blacks is characteristic. Where Blacks are mentioned, problems are slighted. (NH)

Raises the issue of prepublishing censorship by textbook makers in geography texts, provides some examples of this kind of screening, and suggests ways for teachers and students to address the problem.
