Richgels, Donald J. – Journal of Educational Research, 1982
Two research areas, schema theory and linguistic theory, are described which have contributed to theories about language comprehension. Models of language comprehension conceptualized by Roger Schank, Carl Frederiksen, and Walter Kintsch are discussed in relation to the research and evaluated for practical use in reading instruction. Significant differences were found in the ways that good and poor fifth-grade readers used text lookbacks, sampling, and other text behaviors while tutoring younger students. Researchers recommend the tutorial methodology for externalizing metacognitive reading comprehension behavior and for research using error detection paradigms. (Author/PP)

This paper analyzes: (1) the task of learning to read, in the context of cognitive and linguistic tools a child has at his/her disposal; (2) how these tools change with further development and experience; and (3) how teachers can foster this development and growth. Researchers measured how much thinking time teachers allowed third grade readers of various ability levels when responding to questions. Teachers allowed more time for thinking after text-based questions, although scriptal questions usually required higher-level thinking and, consequently, more time. (Author/PP)
