Guerrero, Tricia A.; Wiley, Jennifer – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2021
Past research has suggested that there may be benefits in learning from expository science text when students study with the expectation that they will need to teach another student. The present experiments were designed to extend prior work by testing whether an effect would be seen on both immediate tests (similar to those used in most prior…

Sticca, Fabio; Goetz, Thomas; Nett, Ulrike E.; Hubbard, Kyle; Haag, Ludwig – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2017
This study examined the short- and long-term effects of self-enhancement (i.e., overreporting of academic grades) on academic self-concept and academic achievement. A total of 916, 719, and 647 students participated in the first, second, and third waves of assessment, respectively (mean age at T1 = 15.6 years). At each assessment, students…

Borman, Geoffrey D.; Choi, Yeseul; Hall, Garret J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2021
Stereotype threat has been shown to have deleterious impacts on the short- and long-term academic performance and psychological well-being of racial and ethnic minority students. Psychological variables related to this identity threat represent significant sources of achievement and attainment gaps relative to nonstereotyped Asian and white…

Hodis, Flaviu A. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2018
This article aims to enhance understanding of the nomological network of expectancy of success beliefs related to mathematics. To this end, the paper uses the expectancy-value, regulatory focus, and regulatory mode theoretical frameworks and investigates 3 key classes of motivation predictors: (a) General motivation predispositions that center on…

Johnson-Glenberg, Mina C.; Birchfield, David A.; Tolentino, Lisa; Koziupa, Tatyana – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2014
These 2 studies investigate the extent to which an Embodied Mixed Reality Learning Environment (EMRELE) can enhance science learning compared to regular classroom instruction. Mixed reality means that physical tangible and digital components were present. The content for the EMRELE required that students map abstract concepts and relations onto…

Jang, Hyungshim; Reeve, Johnmarshall; Deci, Edward L. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2010
We investigated 2 engagement-fostering aspects of teachers' instructional styles--autonomy support and structure--and hypothesized that students' engagement would be highest when teachers provided high levels of both. Trained observers rated teachers' instructional styles and students' behavioral engagement in 133 public high school classrooms in…

Winn, William D.; Sutherland, Sandra W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1989
The effects of varying the familiarity, representation, and number of elements in maps and diagrams were assessed, using 89 male and 89 female ninth through eleventh graders. Significant differences distinguished the low- versus high-ability students' responses. The expected effects of form and familiarity on recall performance were not found.…

Low, Renae; Over, Ray – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1993
Female tenth graders (n=217) were less likely than male tenth graders (n=219) to identify missing or irrelevant information in algebra problems. Female eleventh graders (n=234) were less likely than male eleventh graders (n=287) to solve problems with irrelevant information. Results indicate sex differences in knowledge of problem structure. Reynolds, Arthur J.; Walberg, Herbert J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1992
A previously proposed structural model of the theory of educational productivity of H. J. Walberg was tested for science achievement and attitude with a national probability sample of 2,535 tenth graders from the Longitudinal Study of American Youth. Results support a mediated effects representation of the productivity model. (SLD)
