Lorr, Maurice; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Tested for five higher-order dimensions hypothesized to be common to the Interpersonal Style (ISI) and the Sixteen Personality Factor questionnaires among detoxified alcohol dependent inpatients (N=50). Bartsch, Thomas W.; Hoffman, Joseph J. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) data were obtained from 125 male veteran alcoholic inpatients. Evans, Ronald G. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Addressed normative aspects of recent Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory critical item sets in normals (N=123), inpatient alcoholics (N=383) and psychiatric inpatients (N=567). Results indicated that although pathological groups generally endorsed more critical items than normals, mean differences were not large. (LLL)

Yohman, J. Robert; Parsons, Oscar A. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Examined verbal learning/memory in 60 male alcoholics. Results indicated that the predicted relative impairment of alcoholics with more difficult material did not occur, nor did the groups' learning curves differ, suggesting that rote associative learning either remains intact or recovers satisfactorily with abstinence. (Author/BL)

Cernovsky, Zdenek – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Examined the impact of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) Ego Strength (Es) level on the relationship between posttreatment alcohol use and MMPI scores in 54 treated alcoholics. Results showed that for the low Es group, the more intensive the alcohol use, the higher the MMPI scores. (JAC)

Watson, Charles G.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Performed factor analyses of 100 alcoholics' reports of the effects that they experience after alcohol consumption. Five factors emerged: Hangover, Euphoria, Flushing, Seizures, and Sleepiness. These factors may be helpful in assessing theories on the etiology of alcoholism and in studies of ethanol's effects on subsets of alcohol abusers. (BH)

Scaturo, Douglas J.; LeSure, Kenneth B. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Assessed the relationship of self-reported symptoms of psychopathology to self-reported alcohol abuse. Participants (N=72) completed a questionnaire. Findings identified several psychopathological areas related to alcohol abuse: social skill deficits, anxiety, addiction proneness, impulse discontrol, and self-destructive ideation. These results…

Ludenia, Krista; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Examined pre- and posttreatment scores on the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-Y) for 107 veterans in an alcoholic treatment program. Significant differences between pre- and posttreatment scores suggested that the STAI (Form Y) is appropriate for assessing changes in anxiety with alcoholic patients. (JAC)

Donham, Greg W.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Cross-validated findings of Ludenia, et al. (1984) from two independent but similar samples of alcoholic inpatients (N=219) with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) Form Y. Results indicated that the STAI (Form Y) is a stable instrument across time when used to assess anxiety in an alcoholic population. (LLL)

Holmes, Cooper B.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Replied to Hays and Stacy's critique of an article by Holmes, Dungan and McLaughlin in which the validity of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory alcoholism scales was questioned. Presents support for the original conclusions and comments on Hays and Stacy's reanalysis. (JAC)

Pfost, Karen S.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Investigated the relationship of the MacAndrew Alcoholism Scale (MAC) to personality type and level of emotional distress using Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory scores of 38 alcoholic males. No relationship was found between the MAC and magnitude of psychological distress, as measured by T scores. (JAC)

Sherer, Mark; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Attempted to replicate previous research which demonstrated that psychological test results of newly admitted alcoholics are not stable due to lingering alcohol toxicity. The present study (N=40) demonstrated that a 10-day delay in testing is sufficient to obtain stable results on some psychological tests. (Author/JAC)

Cernovsky, Zdenek – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1986
Inpatients (n=67) treated for alcohol and drug abuse were administered the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) and Luescher Color Test (LCT). Patients showed more preference for brown than did normal adults and also obtained higher (i.e., presumably more pathological) scores on Luescher's total score scale and compensation scale.…

Thurber, Steven – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1985
Reports that aggregate studies on alcohol aversion therapy tended to support a moderate level of treatment impact that may have noteworthy practical import. Emetics appeared to generate fairly consistent findings; a paralysis-inducing chemical may produce variable results. (Author/NRB)
