Drasgow, Fritz; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1974
A review of over a thousand studies that deal with either locus of control or levels of interpersonal functioning found no research that deals with both. This study is an initial exploration designed to discover any relationship between scores associated with measures of both locus and levels. (Author)

Penick, Elizabeth C.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Compared sex role attributes of male alcoholic veterans to those of 81 nonalcoholic veterans and 386 college students. Results showed male alcoholics were sex-typed more frequently as feminine than masculine. Results were interpreted as a consequence, not a cause of the disorder and were considered reversible with sustained sobriety. (JAC)

Beck, Aaron T.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Administered the Beck Hopelessness Scale to alcoholic (N=20) and heroin-addicted (N=20) women. Results indicated that although both groups expressed comparable levels of overall hopelessness, alcoholic women anticipated more success and better lives in the next 10 years than did the heroin-dependent women. (LLL)

Cernovsky, Zdenek – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Studied 46 alcoholics one year upon discharge from a residential treatment program based on transactional analysis. Results showed 25 were abstinent and the other 21 were not drinking heavily. Analysis suggested that the abstinent persons had somewhat higher self-esteem and were slightly freer in expression of feelings. (JAC)

Tarter, Ralph E. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1976
This study was initiated with the objective of determining the clinical status and personality structure of wives of alcoholics while their husbands were inpatients in an alcoholism rehabilitation program. (Author/RK)

Quereshi, M. Y.; Soat, Douglas M. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1976
Ratings of self and 15 significant others on four personality factors by 47 alcoholic and 90 nonalcoholic males were analyzed by means of step-wise regression analysis and multivariate analysis of covariance. (Author)

Russell, Stephen F.; Ludenia, Krista – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Examined the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC) Scales with alcoholic patients (N=100). The three MHLC Scales appear to measure largely independent dimensions of locus of control beliefs specifically related to health. Factor analyses suggest that the instrument is factorily valid. (Author/JAC)

Mozdzierz, Gerald J.; Semyck, Roger W. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Investigated construct validity of the Social Interest Index (SII) with 140 male alcoholics. Hypothesized that the SII would relate positively with measures of mental health, intelligence, education, and internal locus of control and would relate negatively with measures of MMPI "pathology" scales. The hypotheses generally were…

Krampen, Guenter – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Alcoholics were more external in powerful others control orientations, more external in chance control orientations, more hopeless, and more Machiavellianistic than the nonalcoholics. Results support the findings of alcoholics' relative externality in locus of control reinforcement. (Author)
Descriptors: Adults, Alcoholism, Comparative Analysis, Depression (Psychology)

Hamblin, D. Kim; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Assessed older alcoholics and psychiatric patients (N=235, N=60) on a standard psychological test battery to examine left and right hemisphere functioning. Results indicated visual-spatial and constructional tasks, newer learning tasks, and secondary memory showed a more pronounced decline than verbal or left hemisphere tasks. (JAC)

McGovern, Mark P. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Compared medical and social setting detoxification treatments of alcohol withdrawal syndrome regarding the degree to which each involved alcoholics (N=200) in ongoing rehabilitative efforts. Results showed highly significant differences between treatment models, with the social setting model showing significantly greater rates of commitment to…

Holmes, Cooper B.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1982
Assessed five alcoholism scales derived from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory for their ability to classify accurately alcoholics and non-alcoholic psychiatric patients. The alcoholic group was divided into self-committed and court-committed. Depending on how the data were treated, found only one, or none of the scales accurate.…

Pushkash, Mark; Quereshi, M. Y. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1980
Alcoholic and nonalcoholic adult males and females (N=100) judged self and three intimate others on four personality characteristics. Alcoholics viewed themselves and their mothers and fathers as more unhappy, less sociable, and less productive and persistent, and their spouses as more unhappy and less sociable than did nonalcoholics. Alcoholics…

Greenblatt, Richard L.; And Others – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1984
Examined test protocols of 64 male inpatient alcoholics to determine whether a general measure of mental health was related to inventories that assess psychopathology beyond what one could expect by subjects responding in a socially desirable manner. Results demonstrated the spuriousness of partial correlations in controlling for social…

Query, William T. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1983
Compared individual differences and treatment effectiveness in male volunteer alcoholics (N=47) in a 10-day electroconditioning aversion program. Follow-up showed combination therapy was more successful. Internals and hard liquor drinkers tended to be abstinent as predicted. Field dependency was a more unstable variable for outcome.
